9/1/2010 - Red Cross Prepares for Hurricane Earl from North Carolina to New England
The American Red Cross is on the ground from North Carolina to New England, preparing to open shelters and feed those affected by Hurricane Earl as the Category 3 storm bears down on the United States, bringing heavy rains and sustained winds blowing at 125 mph.
8/25/2010 - American Red Cross Increases Pakistan Flood Support to $5 Million
As flood waters continue to devastate communities across Pakistan, the American Red Cross is increasing its support to $5 million to help families who have lost their homes and jobs and have little access to clean water and food.
Five years after a hurricane season that wreaked havoc on the Gulf Coast, the American Red Cross released “Bringing Help, Bringing Hope,” a report that details the Red Cross response to Hurricane Katrina, Rita and Wilma and the ensuing years of recovery for the survivors.
8/23/2010 - 2010 Chapman-Holcombe International Intern Program Comes To An End
The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter wrapped up its annual International Intern Program and it was a great success! This unique program hosts Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers from around the world for an internship each summer. This year’s selected interns were Abdel Hameed Sami (Jordan Red Crescent), Bo Zhang (Red Cross Society of China), and Sarah Rose (British Red Cross).
8/23/2010 - Meet an AmeriCorps Volunteer – Kelsey O’Hara, Community Events Specialist
Kelsey O’Hara was born and raised in Carpinteria, CA, a small beach town just south of Santa Barbara. Her childhood is filled with fond memories of family road trips, camping, and summer beach days. Ballet was a huge part of her life. Her most formative high school experience was a trip to Kenya to work at an elementary school and orphanage for children affected by HIV and AIDS.
8/23/2010 - Meet an AmeriCorps Volunteer – Eric Herskowitz, Community Preparedness Specialist
Community Preparedness Specialist Eric Herskowitz is originally from Long Island, NY, and lived there nearly all his life. In college, he majored in Psychobiology and minored in Disaster Studies. It was this unique minor that introduced him to a life of volunteering for the American Red Cross. In New York, Eric joined the DAT team, and had the experience of working in a few shelters in New Paltz during blizzard season.
8/23/2010 - Congreso Familiar Helps Prepare the Latino Community for Emergencies Large and Small
The Congreso Familiar is an annual event. One event is held here in the Bay Area while another is held in Washington D.C.
The Bay Area event was recently held and proved to be a success. The event was a great opportunity for the Latino community to gain more knowledge about community preparedness. Approximately 4,000 people attended the event, and more than 78 local and national agencies participated overall.
8/23/2010 - International Interns Work with Asian Community Preparedness to Learn about Youth for Chinese Elderly Program
This summer, the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter invited three student interns from Jordan, Scotland, and China who are members of the Red Cross/Red Crescent family to visit the Bay Area and learn how the American Red Cross supports major events nationally and locally. After Debbie Yee gave them a presentation about what the Asian Community Preparedness (ACP) Department does, they expressed great interest in the Youth for Chinese Elderly Program (YCE), especially the work they do around monolingual seniors.
8/9/2010 - No End In Sight to Catastrophic Floods in Pakistan
As heavy rains continue and floodwaters wreak havoc across Pakistan, engulfing entire villages and huge swathes of farmland, the American Red Cross is sending $150,000 worth of tarps, blankets and kitchen items to help 5,000 families, in addition to the $100,000 in immediate financial support provided last week.
Whether it’s the last-minute run to the store for the glue that will hold a child’s project together or the dozens of bake sale cupcakes whipped up late at night, parents frequently deal with the unexpected. Being prepared for emergencies—and not just the glue and cupcake variety—is the new golden rule for having a great school year.

About 200 times a day, American Red Cross workers respond to emergencies across the country. These can include anything from single-family fires to large disasters such as floods and hurricanes.
7/30/2010 - Second Annual Marin Disaster Readiness Conference Proves to be a Success
At the second annual Marin Disaster Readiness Conference in June, over 165 participants from the non-profit, faith, government and business communities learned how to create an agency emergency plan to keep essential operations running following a disaster. Attendees learned about disaster planning tools and resources and put pen to paper during a workshop to start their customized plan. In addition, a panel shared best practices on creating a plan, and a workshop provided advice for exercising emergency plans.
Wells Fargo has furthered the Red Cross mission and ensured that local communities are better equipped to handle emergencies. Wells Fargo continuously supports the Red Cross community preparedness and disaster relief efforts as well as the Disaster Readiness Summit and Paint the Town Red Gala.
7/25/2010 - Club Red Comedy Night at the Purple Onion was a Great Success
Club Red packed the house at The Purple Onion comedy club in North Beach, raising $1,270 for local disaster readiness and relief work while enjoying a night of hilarious comedy, socializing and raffle prizes including a two night stay in Venice Beach. Among the comedians who performed was the chapter’s very own Stacy Williams, who brought down the house.
7/25/2010 - Thanks to Community Events Volunteers for Making the Red Cross Proud at Pride
The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter participated in the Gay Pride Parade for the fourth year in a row and received local coverage for the first time on KOFY. This year's theme was “Sexy CPR.” Fifty volunteers and staff marched (and danced) alongside the Bay Responder dressed like nurses and CPR instructors and handed out goody bags filled with CPR discounts, preparedness brochures, pocket first aid kits and mints.
7/25/2010 - Bay Area, Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz Chapters Partner to Prepare Latino Community for Potential Spread of the Flu
The American Red Cross Bay Area, Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz Chapters joined forces to prepare local Latinos to combat the flu and other emergencies. These chapters were able to come together thanks to a generous grant from the University of California, Berkeley.
7/25/2010 - 38th Annual Youth for Chinese Elderly Luncheon Draws its Largest Crowd Ever
On Monday June 7, the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter Youth for Chinese Elderly (YCE) program held its 38th annual luncheon at the Far East Café in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite the current economic downturn, this year’s celebration of the YCE program drew its largest crowd yet, with nearly 400 people in attendance.

While graduate student Sou-Cheng Choi had already taken the steps to prepare herself in the event of a devastating earthquake in the Bay Area, she worried that her mother, who did not understand English, would not be as prepared.
